RACER COMMUNICATION - sent

Rules - posted

This cold-natured Rogaine is returning once again for a winter tromp through the rolling ravines at eXplore Brown County. We'll also be offering a FREE navigation clinic for those just getting into the sport, with discounted rates for lodging and a Winter Adventure Zipping package!

Results from last year's race are posted. Note to speedsters: a new format for 2014 will hopefully keep you on your numb toes for the entire race.

format

FRIGID 2014 is going to be a unique event. We hope to have a good mix of both veteran and beginner navigators at this race so we're using a format that will challenge you all. Here's how it works:

Just like a standard rogaine there will be a certain number of controls/checkpoints (CPs) for you to find using a map and compass. All CPs will be worth one point each. To challenge our faster racers we'll have a number of bonus CPs available.

Bonus CPs:
You'll receive a pre-marked map with all the regular CPs marked on it. The location of the bonus CPs will be revealed to you on the course. Attached to certain CP flags will be a map with a bonus CP location marked on it. You'll copy it onto your map and have the opportunity to get some bonus points. You will know before the start of the race which of the CP flags will have bonus CP maps attached.

Scoring:
Teams/solos will first be ranked by number of regular CPs punched then by number of bonus CPs. So for example, Team Cold Toes punches 10 regular CPs and 0 bonus, Team Soggy Socks punches 9 regular CPs and 3 bonus CPs - Cold Toes wins since they are ranked higher using regular CPs first. As you can see there is an element of strategy in this format.

Four Hours:
There is a 4 hour time limit. Any team/solo arriving late will receive a 1 point penalty plus 1 point per each additional 5 minutes past 4 hours they arrive at the finish. For example at 4 hours, 5 minutes the penalty is -2 points, at 4 hours, 10 minutes it's -3 points.

What is a Rogaine?

A Rogaine is simply a race in which participants use a map and compass to locate checkpoints (CPs). The goal is to locate the most CPs in the allotted time. Sometimes CPs are assigned a point value according to their difficulty. Then the goal is to get the most points. There is no set course so you are free to choose any route you'd like.

If you'd like to give this type of race a try but aren't so sure about the whole navigation thing, you're not alone. We're confident, however, that with just a little instruction you can be proficient enough to start enjoying not only rogaining, but other navigation based events - like ADVENTURE RACING ! If you'd like to learn how to navigate, then join us for the FREE Navigation clinic the evening before the race. We'll be happy to show you what's going on and answer any questions. See below for more details, or contact us if you have any questions about getting into this sport.

Free Navigation Clinic & Get-Together:
For anyone who registers to do the race on Sunday, we are offering a FREE navigation clinic the evening before the race. This is a great opportunity for new(er) racers interested in the sport to learn the basics of navigation. We’re pretty confident you’ll be prepared to find some points come Sunday morning! If you’re interested, just check the box during race registration indicating that you’ll be joining us for the clinic.

We'll also be hanging out at eXplore immediately following the nav clinic and everyone is invited. Depending on interest, the get-together will range from a bon-fire (with carb-loading s'mores) to possible festivities inside the Harvest Hall (a band or a movie). If this sounds like something you'd be into, just check the "nav clinic" box during race registration, you won't have to participate in the clinic, but any veteran navigators are welcome to join us and help out if you'd like.

Post Race:
We want this to be a time where we can all get together with our friends that perhaps we haven't seen over the winter. We have the (HEATED) Harvest Hall at our disposal, and we'll be serving sandwiches and hot soup after the race. We'll have a brief awards ceremony, and for those of you who are interested in sticking around for a little longer we'd like to have a roundtable discussion about where the sports of Rogaining & Adventure Racing are headed in the future. Specifically, we'd like to hear your thoughts on gender divisions in the sports, i.e. does gender really matter in these sports?
